Using Webkit/GTK+ in Mac OS X

Webkit/GTK+ is a really nice thing already. It still has it's rough edges, but it already works really nicely.

Lets giggle together

So, it's been almost a week since we released Giggle. We've been happily receiving lots of love in the form of emails, bug reports, suggestions, patches and even debian packages. Now we think it's time to share some love with you, so let's giggle together.

Doing so is pretty easy: you can subscribe to the giggle mailing list or join the Jabber chat room giggle on conference.imendio.com.

Nice Tree Effect

Did you ever wonder why applications like nautilus display a node called »(empty)« in the tree? I didn't. There are several reasons that could be brought up here, but in my opinion the Windows Explorer just got it right:

  1. if you don't know, display an expander
  2. if you look at it and it's empty, just remove the expander

So I tried to implement this behaviour in GQ. It wasn't very easy, but it works. As I wrote last week, I suspected a bug in that code, so I developed a small test case to play with that feature. If you're interested in it for your application, take my example and build your own tree model.

Gnome Canvas

Kjartan came up to me a month ago, giving a list of Gnome Canvas bugs to me that might be worth to look at. As there's hasn't been much to do for Imendio yet, I spent my working time and also some spare time on the Gnome Canvas during the last month.

It was quite nice to take a look at this code again. The most interesting part for me as a canvas developer was to take a more detailed look at some specific parts of Gnome Canvas that aren't really solved in a very good way (the reasons haven been technical issues mostly) and to get an idea of how to do some things a bit nicer.

ImendioConf and LWE

So, I haven't been blogging for quite some time. And I actually have to good excuses for that: I have been really busy during the last weeks (ImendioConf took place in the beginning of November; Linux World Expo in Cologne the week after) and my server has been down for 2 weeks (I'm sorry).

But now things are getting back up again (at least most of the SVN trees and web sites are) and I can catch up with some things.

Gnome on a TabletPC

I have been planning to do this for quite some time now. But it's done: Gnome Tablet Tools Website.

I'm planning to finish the debugger (see yesterday's post), then get the feed reader working and ported to Maemo 2.0. And then I'm going to finish the handwriting stuff (I hope to have this ready for GUADEC) to have something that people can use to make Gnome rock the TabletPC world.

Back to work...

The last 6 weeks have been a very nice time since I quit at Elkware because they don't need the services of a GNU/Linux software developer anymore. I'm going to have one or two weeks trial period at Lufthansa Systems to maintain the software that I've developed at Elkware which has been sold to LH.

Back to life...

Had a very nice day at the baths in Itzehoe. The day ended up very nicely with a new girlsfriend. Life's quite funny, once you have time for a girlfriend you won't find one until time is getting rarer... (hopefully this makes girlfriend time more recreational than otherwise...)

Work & University

Hey, been to work the first time for almost 3 weeks now. Now it's back to JSP and Java coding (I think I will miss the C/C++ Linux development).

Have been happy that I hadn't attended our company's party yesterday, our graphic guys were just doing lots of useless editing of photos just to enjoy us developers and testers.

I still need to to lots hacking for our university project. Hopefully I will find time this weekend (I guess it would be better for me if I didn't hack on criawips too long).

GNOME & Criawips

Didn't have much time today to work on these areas, finally I got registered for the aKademy (KDE conference 2004 nearby Stuttgart) today.

Real Life

Slept very long, missed the C# and .NET intruduction at the university; wento to work, went home, planning to spend a nice evening in the bar of our students dormitory.
